Liberty Energy Inc., the Denver-based oilfield services company that has been building a power business for data centers, says that business has signed its largest agreement so far. In third-quarter 2026 results dated Oct. 21, the company said its subsidiary Liberty Power Innovations (LPI) signed a strategic development agreement with "a leading frontier AI lab and a dedicated infrastructure platform to deliver 1.2 GW of integrated power services at data center campuses."
Liberty did not name either counterparty. None of the sources DataCenterFeed reviewed identify the AI lab, the infrastructure platform, or the campus locations.
What the Agreement Says
The terms come from the company's earnings release, filed with the SEC as Exhibit 99.1. Most of the detail is in remarks attributed to CEO Ron Gusek. The release gives these terms:
- Capacity: 1.2 GW of integrated power services across data center campuses, according to Liberty.
- Prepayment: In Gusek's words, the agreement "includes a significant prepayment of capacity fees." The release does not give the amount.
- First contract: Liberty is targeting "execution of the first energy service agreement (ESA) contract for approximately 500 megawatts (MW) by December 2026," Gusek said.
- Schedule: The agreement "establishes a phased energization schedule from Q4 2027 through Q1 2029," according to the release.
- Later contracts: The agreement "includes the substantive commercial terms for the additional long-term ESAs," Gusek said.
The structure matters. The release calls the arrangement a strategic development agreement, and the energy service agreements (ESAs) are the contracts it refers to for the power itself. By Liberty's own description, the first ESA, covering about 500 MW, had not yet been signed when results came out. It is targeted for December 2026. The release says the agreement already includes the substantive commercial terms for the additional long-term ESAs.
Gusek also said the parties are "already working together to advance additional projects across other sites, including gas supply, interconnection, permitting and construction planning." The release does not specify the generation technology, the number of campuses, or their locations.
Where This Fits in Liberty's Power Push
The company's investor relations press-release list shows a series of power announcements in 2026 before this one:
- Jan. 5, 2026: "Vantage Data Centers and Liberty Energy Announce Strategic Partnership to Develop and Operate One Gigawatt of Power Solutions for Next Generation Data Centers."
- July 14, 2026: "SLB, Liberty Energy to Form Strategic Alliance for Data Center Infrastructure and Power."
- July 22, 2026: "Liberty Energy and PowerBridge Form Strategic Joint Venture to Support Powered Data Center Campus Development."
These descriptions come from the release titles on Liberty's newsroom list. DataCenterFeed has not reviewed the full text of those releases for this article. Nothing in the sources reviewed says whether the new 1.2 GW agreement is connected to the Vantage, SLB or PowerBridge arrangements.
The Q3 release also says Liberty collaborated with the U.S. Department of Energy's National Laboratory of the Rockies at its advanced grid simulation testbed, and describes the work as validating Liberty's power technologies under real-world grid conditions. The release gives no further details.
The Quarter in Numbers
Liberty's main business is still hydraulic fracturing and related oilfield services, and the power agreement appeared alongside a quarterly loss. The company reported these figures for the third quarter:
- Revenue of $1.2 billion, up 26% from a year earlier.
- Net loss of $39 million, or $0.24 per share.
- Adjusted net income of $10 million, or $0.06 per share.
- Adjusted EBITDA of $142 million.
- $15 million paid in dividends during the quarter.
Liberty also raised its quarterly cash dividend by 11% to $0.10 per share, starting in the fourth quarter of 2026. The company's newsroom lists the increase as a separate announcement dated Oct. 20.
Outside coverage compared the results with analyst estimates. Those figures belong to the outlets, not to Liberty. The Associated Press's automated earnings snapshot, published by the Durango Herald, put adjusted earnings at 6 cents per share against a Zacks consensus of 8 cents from six analysts. It put revenue at $1.2 billion against $1.17 billion expected by five analysts. The AP snapshot did not mention the data center agreement. Rallies.ai, an automated market news service, reported different consensus numbers: adjusted EPS of $0.06 against $0.09, revenue of $1.20 billion against a $1.19 billion estimate, and adjusted EBITDA of $141.63 million against a $146.93 million estimate.
Reading the Deal: Questions Still Open
The release is useful for what it confirms and also for what it leaves out. Several questions remain unanswered in the sources reviewed:
Who is the customer? Liberty describes a "leading frontier AI lab" and a "dedicated infrastructure platform." It has not named either one, and the release does not say how the two parties' roles divide.
Where are the sites? The release mentions "other sites" and work on interconnection and permitting, but gives no locations.
How large is the prepayment? Liberty calls it "significant" but has not disclosed a figure.
What is the generation mix? The release mentions gas supply and describes the service as "integrated power services" with an "integrated power architecture tailored to the generation, power quality, reliability and dynamic AI load requirements." It does not break down how the 1.2 GW would be generated or stored.
What Happens Next
The next milestone Liberty has stated publicly is signing the first energy service agreement, for about 500 MW, which the company targets for December 2026. Under the development agreement, energization is scheduled in phases from the fourth quarter of 2027 through the first quarter of 2029, according to the company. Separately, the higher quarterly dividend of $0.10 per share begins in the fourth quarter of 2026. The sources reviewed give no date for naming the counterparties or disclosing site locations.
